What Is TPM?


Friends, the origin of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is from Japan. Nippondenso was the first company to start Plant Preventive Maintenance in 1960, which manufactured parts for the Toyota Company.


In Preventive Maintenance, the operator produces goods using machines and the job of the Maintenance Group was to maintain those machines.


Thus both the Operator and the Maintenance Group were required. So the management decided that the regular maintenance of the equipment would be done by the operators as no one can know about that machine better than an operator and the maintenance group will work towards extending the life cycle of those machines.


Thus the concept of TPM came and in 1971 Nippondenso of the Toyota Group became the first company to get TPM certification by joining the TPM process and Nippondenso was awarded the prestigious Plant Award for development and implementation of TPM by the Japanese Institute of Plant Engineers (JIPE).


Apart from this, modifications and new concepts like 8 Pillars of TPM, etc. Are also added from time to time.


What Is The Meaning Of TPM?


TPM is such a culture that involves all the people inside the plant and maintains all the old machines as if there are new machines so that they can give maximum output and become more productive.


That is why TPM is also known as "Medical Science Of Machine".

3. Planned Maintenance


Under this, you have to plan for the maintenance of all the equipment or whatever machines you have.


For example, if a machine reduces its production capacity after running 1000 hours then you can run it for 950 hours and Will do maintenance only after that. All this is exactly the same as in servicing our car. 


4. Quality Maintenance


Under this, you keep the quality of the material in mind. It says that we have to make the material perfect in one go, not that first we have made the material and then we are sorting it, which is Ok Material and which is not.


In this way, to make the material, we have to maintain the machine like this, develop such a procedure and such a system so that it can produce Zero Defect Material. 


5. Early Equipment Management


Its second name is Development Management, under this you do pre-planning, as if you are going to launch a new product or take a new machine, then you will plan it in advance that what may be the problems in it, What things may you need so that you can get its full output from Day 1 itself. 


6. Education And Training
